Thursday 19th June

Match v American Schools' Swifts

On Thursday 19th June, a combined team of pupil golfers from Canford, Marlborough and Winchester competed against the American Schools Swifts Team. The three players from Canford (Hollis, Searle & Willder) headed up the combined team, having the lowest handicaps. That being the case, they took on the top American players and were comprehensively beaten by excellent opposition.

The match at Hockley was played with a Fourball Betterball format. By the time the top match was lost by Hollis & Searle, their opponents were 6 under par gross off the Championship tees! The story was similar in the second match involving Willder and a Marlborough player.

The British team did manage to secure a win in the fourth pair, thereby producing a match result of 3-1 to the American team.

It was an afternoon of superb golf to watch and the touring opponents were very good company. The home team were humbled but not disgraced - we'll seek revenge in The Ryder Cup later in the yea

Thursday 15th May

B Team v
Diocesan Clergy

In a friendly 'B' team match, Canford played the Diocesan Clergy on the Canford course on the afternoon of Thursday 15th May. Each of the three matches see-sawed throughout the afternoon, with Canford leading in all three at one point. However, the Clergy finished well in all three games, ending with an overall victory of 2.5 to 0.5.

Gus Bass (playing a singles game)  - lost 1 down
Fortune & Jenvey in a betterball format   - halved
Dyson & Bodnar-Horvath - lost 2&1

Thursday 1st May

Matches v Winchester

On Thursday 1st May, Canford fielded a 'B' team (with the exception of Ed Searle - 'A' team) in a triangular golf match against Bradfield and Winchester at Hockley Golf Club. We played in a format not used in other golf matches - Stableford points, full handicap allowance, top five scores to count.

The scores for the Canford team were:
Searle 37
Hassell 33
Jenvey 31
Hayward 29
Hudson 27
Bass 25

The aggregate of our top five scores - 157 - gave us second place behind Bradfield (162) and ahead of Winchester (144). It was a refreshing change of format and a good opportunity for some new players to represent the school.

Thursday 24th April

Matches v Milton Abbey and Sherborne

On Thursday afternoon (24th April) Canford fielded two teams to play golf matches against Sherborne and Milton Abbey respectively. A weakened 'A' team took on Sherborne away on the hilly Sherborne Golf Club course. The format was 'fourball betterball'. Each of the three matches see-sawed throughout the afternoon.

Canford's first pairing (Searle & Willder) led at one stage by two holes. but on approach to 18th tee they were 1 down. However, Searle birdied the last hole to ensure that match was halved. Our second pairing (Williams & Fortune) were, at one stage, three down, but they steadily fought back to secure the win, 2 up. The third pairing of Hooper & Hudson saw a close match run away from them in the end, going down by a score of 3&2. Therefore, the 'A' team match against Sherborne was drawn.

Meanwhile, at home, our 'B' team took on Milton Abbey 'A' team and secured a drawn match too. The top pairing of Dyson & Hayward won 3 & 2.  The second pairing (Jenvey & Bodnar-Horvath) had a very close battle in their first match for the school and ended up with a drawn match. The third pairing of Bass & Hassell obviously met opposition that were too good on the day as their margin of defeat (7&6) shows.

So, the season has begun with two drawn matches.

Thursday 18th October

ISGA Competition - Canford v Wellington College (2nd round)

Canford played Wellington College in the second round of the ISGA golf competition on Thursday at South Winchester golf club.
Three close singles matches ended in a 2-1 win for Wellington. This was a reversal of last years match and reflected the strong state of their golf this year.

In the first match, Ollie Willder won 1 up, having been three down at one stage. In the second match, Ed Searle lost 2 & 1 and in the third match Elliott Hawkins also lost 2&1.

It was a closely fought competition which could have gone either way - however, this time it was against us. Well done to all those in the Canford team.

Saturday 13th October

The School v The Club - The St. Andrew's Challenge

Saturday saw the annual golf match of the School vs the Club, known as the St. Andrew's Challenge.  Neither the School nor the Club were able to field their strongest teams but the result of some close fought games produced a match result of a win for the club of 4 - 2.

There were wins for Ed Searle and Elliot Hawkins, playing at numbers 2 & 3 respectively, but Ollie Willder lost to Canford teacher, Neil Watkins in the top match. Jon Dyson's loss and that of Richard Kane were by narrow margins, whereas Nick Hassell never recovered from a disastrous start.

An excellent match, but the Club retain the trophy for another year.

Thursday 4th October

Canford v Reading Blue-Coat, HMC Foursomes (a)

Canford lost to Reading Blue-Coat in the first round of the HMC Foursomes in a very closely fought match on the Hockley course, Winchester.

Canford were weakened by injuries but neverthless, came very close to winning.  The second pair, Eales and Hudson suffered a heavy defeat in their game.  The third pair of Hawkins and Hassell were never behind and ended up 3& 2 winners.

So the match depended on the first pair, Searle and Willder. The match see-sawed in the course of the round but with three holes to play, Canford were two up. However, the opposition finished very strongly winning the last three holes and secury the victory on the last green.

Thursday 27th September

Canford A team vs Eton at Liphook Golf Club

On a crisp autumnal afternoon Canford played a singles match against a young Eton team at Liphook Golf Club. The course was in pristine condition -  an excellent example of heathland golf -  and the greens were as fast as any of us had played on all year, which suited some more than others.  At the end of the match the score was 21/2 points to Eton 31/2 points to Canford.
The individual scores were as follows:

Oli Wilder lost  4 & 2
Andy Eales won 4 & 2
Elliot Hawkins won 4 & 2
Marcus Williams lost 4 & 2
Tom Bloxham won 7 & 6
Richard Kane halved

This was a pleasing result from a developing side, with excellent showings from a couple of new additions to the team.

Saturday 22nd September

Canford School vs OCs at Golf

OCs 2 - 1 Canford

Members of the school golf squad took on the OCs in a fourball betterball format and it was the turn of the Old Canfordian to show their younger counterparts how to compete. The boys team included three competent 'rookies' who all played well at times, but not well enough to see off their experienced opponents.

Searle and Willder won the first match for the school with a 3&2 victory.  Birch & Elliott lost the second match 2 down at the end, when their opponents sank a monster putt on the 17th and then had a birdie putt on the 18th.  Williams and Hayward pulled back after a disastrous front nine, but eventually went down 3&2.

Thursday 20th September

On a dull windswept afternoon, Canford golfers defeated KES Bath in the first round of the ISGA National tournament. Each game was close and in two of the matches the Canford players turned a losing score around to run out eventual winners. The final score was 3 - 0.

Ed Searle led throughout and eventually beat his opponent 2&1, Ollie Willder was 3 down at one stage but fought back to win 1 up and Elliot Hawkins had been 2 down but also ended with a 1 up victory.

Well done to the players, on the first stage of their defence of the South of England title.

Saturday 8th September

Canford A team vs Millfield (home)

On Saturday 8th September on a beautiful late summer afternoon Canford played a strong Millfield team on the School course. The course was playing well and the fringes were quite punishing, as a number of our visitors discovered, but all thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. At the end of the match the score was 21/2 points to  Canford 31/2 points to Millfield. The individual scores were as follows.

Jamie Edwards lost by 1
Edward Searle finished all square
Oli Wilder won 3 & 1
Elliot Hawkins won 1 up
Nick Hassel lost by 1
John Dyson lost by 1

This was a good showing from a young side with lots of potential for the future against, undoubtedly, the strongest school golf team in the country.

Thursday 6th September

Canford B team vs Milton Abbey (away)

On a hot afternoon, playing on a lush green course with small, slow greens,  Canford's B team beat Milton Abbey at golf 2-1.

In a fourball-betterball format the following results were secured:

Elliot Hawkins & Nick Hassell won 6&5
Sam Jones & Tom Bloxham lost 6&5
Marcus Williams & Richard Kane won 7&6

Elliot and Nick had a particularly accomplished round, including an eagle 2 for Elliott on a 230 yard par 4.
