Marlborough always prove to be a tough fixture, whatever the sport, and last Saturday’s hockey matches were no different. Unfortunately, Canford were unable to secure any wins at all and a number of teams will rue the missed opportunities to gain that elusive victory.

The 1st XI displayed great character and resolve to come back from a 3-0 deficit to eventually draw 3-3 and such a good comeback sets the team up for the latter half of term.Disappointingly, both our 2nd and 3rd went down to similar 1-2 score-lines, the 3rd team experiencing their first defeat of the season.

The story for the rest of the hockey club was much the same. The A teams all went down to narrow defeats but all could have turned the result around if their finishing had been a little more composed. Both U16 teams lost 0-2, bringing to an end their impressive run of successes. Several players will return to the U16’s from the 1st XI and this will bolster confidence levels for the upcoming Regional tournament.

The U15 teams also suffered defeats, the As battling bravely but losing 3-2 while the Bs lost heavily 8-1. There were defeats all round at U14 level - the Bs going down 2-6 and the Cs 0-4.

The 14A’s  lost 1-2 despite dominating territory and possession but the boys displayed tremendous character and some real hockey aptitude by claiming the West of England title just one day later. Their final match was against Taunton and Canford reversed the defeat from the beginning of term to take the title with a 2-1 victory. These boys have matched their female counterparts by qualifying for the National championships later this spring

Sunday 2nd February

Hockey v Sherborne

1st: D 2-2                2nd: W 3-2
3rd: W 6-0               4th: W 4-1
U16A: W 5-1            U16B: W 2-0
U15A: W 2-0            U15B: L 2-1
U14A: W 7-1

The weekend was successful one for our hockey teams with good performances from many of the teams ensuring victories against Sherborne. The 1st XI played a few days earlier on the previous Thursday in order to rest for their County U18 Final on Sunday the 3rd Feb.  Perhaps mindful of the county game the 1st XI didn’t perform to their best yet still managed to secure a 2-2 draw away from home. The 2nd XI played out an entertaining 3-2 victory and they are now managing to produce a string of high-scoring games, as are the 3rd XI who won in a thoroughly dominating 6-0. The 4ths added to this fine tally with a good 4-1 victory.

The U16 teams were both victorious, the A’s charging to a thumping 5-1 score-line, and the B’s with a more modest 2-0 win. The U15A’s produced the same margin of victory but the U15Bs unfortunately went down to a narrow 2-1 defeat. This was the only Sherborne victory of the day. Finally, the U14As produced the highest scoring match of the day, winning 7-1.

Saturday 19th January

Matches v Taunton School

The boy’s hockey teams were looking forward to playing Taunton School on Saturday as it gave many of the teams the opportunity to turn their fortunes around after the heavy defeats against Millfield. There were a number of strong performances with plenty of goals scored.

The 1st XI endured a close game winning 1-0 although neither team was able to really kill off the game decisively. Quite the opposite was true for the 2nd team however, winning 5-3 in a high scoring and exciting game. Meanwhile the 3rds cruised to a comfortable 3-1 victory and the 4ths, in their first game of the season, managed a 5-2 victory.  The highest scoring game of the day quite clearly goes to the U16As though, who won with a huge 11-0 score-line out-classing their opponents throughout. The U16Bs also scored plenty of goals winning 4-1 but their opponents were Milton Abbey.

The Canford U15 team includes a couple of players who will represent the U16’s in the County tournament and this extra class told as they came out on top against Taunton U15A’s  4-1.  Unfortunately, the U14 A & B teams could not match the results of the older year groups as both teams went down 1-3 against strong Taunton opposition. The exeat weekend halts the momentum slightly but the U14’s need to work and train hard in the next ten days or so to produce improved performances in the next fixture.

Results:

1st: W 1-0        2nd: W 5-3
3rd: W 3-1        4th: W 5-2
U16A: W 11-0   U16B: W 4-1 (v. Milton Abbey)
U15A: W 4-1     U14A: L 1-3
U14B: L 1-3

Saturday 12th January

Hockey v Millfield

The 1st XI went down to a disappointing 0-6 loss, Millfield showing their class and their considerable strength in depth. The boys should not be disheartened too much as the Millfield 1st XI have been playing for a whole term but there must be an improvement in fitness standards if the Canford 1st XI are to do themselves justice this season. The 2nd XI were also defeated, losing 1-3, but the 3rd XI managed to record a strong 3-1 victory to buck the trend. And also carry on where the 3rd XV left off last term.

Amongst the junior teams matches against Millfield there was unfortunately only one further victory. The U16As showed their potential with a strong 3-1 win, but the story was very different for both U15 and U14 teams. The U15 As lost 2-6, both teams showing their attacking intent, while the Bs lost in a closer 0-1. The U14 Aand B teams both lost 0-5, while the Cs went marginally closer losing 1-3.

Results:

U15A: L 2-6
U15B: L 0-1
U14A: L 0-5
U14B: L 0-5
