Matches v Marlborough

The seniors played at home to Marlborough while the juniors played away to Marlborough, though unfortunately all of our senior teams suffered defeats. The 1sts went down fighting hard 1-2, the 2nds finishing with the exact same result. The 3rds, as is often the case, played in a high-scoring game but sadly the goals all game from the wrong team, losing 0-5, while the 4ths counter-balanced this in a simple 0-1 defeat. The juniors, while playing away, tried their best to remedy this streak of losses. The U15As provided the only win of the day, with a close 5-4 victory. Sadly the other U15 teams both lost, the Bs 1-2 and the Cs 0-2. the U14B team lost 1-2, but the other teams both managed draws, the Cs finishing 1-1 and the Ds a conservative 0-0.

U16 West of England Championships

The U16 girls hockey squad competed at the West of England Championships at Clifton on Sunday and battled to a brave 5th place finish. Some bad luck with injuries during the early part of the tournament meant the team were without key players Lou Linley-Adams and Alice Toynton for several games and the rest of the team simply ran out of steam. All the girls should be very proud of their efforts.

Matches v King's Taunton

1st XI      W 3-6
2nd XI     W 2-3
3rd XI      D 1-1
4th XI     W 0-9
15A        W 7-1
15B        W 11-0
14A        W 7-0
14B        W 4-0

The Hockey results were extremely pleasing for Canford in that King's Taunton were, in many ways, demolished. Only one match did not end in victory our teams, and that was still a draw. The 1sts did well to win 6-3 away from home, as did the 2nds to finish 3-2, the 3rds recorded the previously mentioned draw of 1-1 and the 4ths achieved the best victory of the senior teams of 9-0.

As for the junior teams, they kept this fine series going. The U15As won 7-1 and the Bs 11-0, both teams clearly dominating the matches and barely giving their opponents the chances they needed. The U14s did similarly well, the As winning 7-0 and the Bs 4-0.

Match Report  - 1st XI v Kings Taunton

Canford 1stXI   6     Kings Taunton  3

In a match that has been settled by the odd goal over the past few years, going behind after five minutes did not bode well.  However, the early storm was weathered and Canford started to gain the upper hand. Playing some good quality hockey Canford drew level then took the lead just before half time, in between having 3 goals disallowed.

The second half started much like the first with Kings scoring again in five minutes; but this time Canford responded straight away and continued scoring throughout the half only allowing a short corner in with the last hit of the game, resulting in a final 6 -3 victory to Canford.

A special mention for Beth Linley-Adams and Louisa Thornton, two outstanding performances.

1st XI v Epsom College, matches v Bradfield

The 1st XI played for the first time against Epsom College and despite dominating possession couldn't quite get the all important goal resulting in a 0-0 draw. Epsom played some good counter attacking hockey while we lacked a cutting edge finish despite several chances. The team's overall work rate must be noted however.

The rest of the hockey teams played against various Bradfield sides, the 2nd XI also drawing 0-0 while the 3rd XI won their match with an excellent 5-0 result against Bradfield's 2nds. The 4th XI beat their U16 Bs with Williamson scoring to make it 1-0, while conversely the U15 As played their U16 As and lost 1-3. The two other U15 teams drew 0-0. The Bs playing their As and the Cs playing their Bs. The U14As also drew 0-0, and the Bs finishing off the school's matches and their opponents 5-0.

Matches v v Sherborne & Bournemouth Hockey Club

1st XI tournament v Bryanston, Wellington, Leweston & Blundells

The weekend saw a good run of results for most of the hockey teams with some very impressive scores. The 1st XI took part in a practice tournament, playing against Bryanston, Wellingston, Leweston and Blundells. They won two matches, drew one and lost one, a good improvement from the previous weekend's efforts, something which they must now try to maintain.

The 2nd XI lost their game 1-2 against Sherborne, but the 3rd XI more than made up for that with a solid 2-0 win in a team performance that was described by their coach as full of energy and enthusiasm, Aiken and Whitby scoring for them. The U15Bs won with a resounding 4-0 and the U14s As and Bs managed similar scores, the former finishing 5-1 and the later 4-0 too. The Cs ended on a 2-0 triumph, and the Ds, the only team playing against Bournemouth H.C., drew 1-1.
