Dr Rachel Quarrell was welcomed to Canford as our resident chemist for 13th-17th March.
Dr Quarrell studied at St John's College Oxford, where she finished her doctorate on combinatorial chemistry in 1994. She now tutors chemists and biochemists at Lincoln and Balliol Colleges in Oxford, and her most recent research was into the synthesis of new anti-malarial and anti-cancer drugs. She has a sideline as the official rowing correspondent for the Telegraph newspapers, and creates and edits several sports websites.
As well as leading experiments and discussion in chemistry, ICT and English lessons, she also gave two lectures to pupils: Malaria - the world's most difficult disease and a lecture for sixth formers about the media's portrayal of science and medicine, drawing on the recent interest in bird flu, entitled: Lies, damned lies and newspaper headlines - telling the truth about science.
