The 'totem pole' combination of Shell pupils' sculptures
The 'totem pole' combination of Shell pupils' sculptures
During the Christmas term, sculptor and artist Andy Kirby spent 14 weeks working with two groups of keen students. The two groups, made up of shells through to Upper 6th, had a brief introduction to stone carving before embarking on pieces carved into durox trenchblocks. Carving is a demanding and occasionally frustrating discipline but one that teaches patience and determination.

It was refreshing to see students work on pieces for such an extended period of time. The juniors based their pieces on objects from the sea and the seniors had more of an open brief choosing subject matter such as the figure and plant forms. The junior pieces were assembled into one large totem and the seniors have their work displayed outside the art school on plinths from the school grounds. Many of the pupils who worked on this project do not take art as a timetabled option, which makes the project even more interesting and successful.
