Sunday 18th February

Canford have secured their place in the National U14 boys' hockey finals after impressive play at the West of England tournament on Sunday 18th February.  They beat Hereford Cathedral School 11-0, South Devon College 5-1, but lost to Millfield 2-4 in their group games.  However, they had done enough to go through to the semi-finals as group runners up.  With their composure and confidence restored, the team defeated Clifton 3-1 before reversing the earlier result against Millfield , winning the final 2-0 and emerging from the day as deserved West of England champions.   Congratulations to the team and coaches!

Thursday 1st February

Canford 1st XI  2 - 2 Sherborne 1st XI

Two evenly matched teams resulted in the game being played at a very high tempo with no quarter asked.  In the early exchanges, the pace of Sherborne's midfield proved to be a constant threat but Canford's defence, in the form of Louis Samuals and Ben Foulkes, held firm.

As the game moved on, a series of short corners were won and from the third attempt Rob Reid drilled the ball past a stunned goal keeper.  The lead lasted only a couple of minutes as Sherborne gained a free hit outside the 'D' and played the ball through a group of players, leaving Steve Chase no chance as the Sherborne player knocked the ball in at the near post. Canford still managed a couple of great chances before the half time whistle including our own Jamie Ward behind his stick on the Sherborne goal line, stopping Simon Hanley's goal-bound shot on his debut for the 1st team.

The second half started with Sherborne pushing forward, and from one of the resulting short corners a disguised drag flick dropped into the Canford net. This seemed to spur Canford on, and from then on it was Sherborne's turn to be pushed back, time and again. The Canford forwards came close; shots past the post, last ditch saves and two goal line clearances from short corners.  With only five minutes to go Hanley again moved in from the left, drew three defenders towards him before laying the ball back to Max Flowerdew who rifled the ball into the net.

Canford meet Sherborne in the County Cup on Sunday 4th Feb; it should be a close match. Start time 9.30am on Franklin

Tuesday 30th January 2007

14b   2  -   1  Castle Court

Saturday 20th January

Canford 1st XI  3 - 1  Taunton 1st XI

In a fixture that Canford has fail to win in the last 7 years, the team approached this game with the same determination as the Millfield match last week. As a result of this, they controlled much of the first half, limiting Taunton to only half chances in front of Steve Chase's goal. However, Canford also failed to finish off the numerous efforts created around the ‘D', so the teams went into half time level.

The second half continued in much the same way with Canford playing the better hockey. As the game went on, Rob Reid started to find the forward line in more attacking positions, and managed to pick out Max Flowerdew who calmly lifted the ball over the advancing goalkeeper. Almost immediately from the re-start Rob again pick up the ball in mid-field, but this time carried the ball past three defenders to rifle the ball into the goal.  The third and best goal of the match came from an aerial ball to Max Flowerdew on the left wing who then played a reverse stick pass to Rory Ferguson running in from midfield and sliding the ball this time under the oncoming goalkeeper.  Taunton manage to pull a goal back in the last five minutes from a short corner given away by Harry Edwards, but this was to be there only chance.

Congratulations to the whole team, with special mention to their captain, Ben Foulkes.

Saturday 13th January

Canford 1st  XI  0  -  6   Millfield

A disappointing result, but the performance in the first half showed that the team are capable of competing against future oppositions well.  The game started evenly, with both teams matching each other all over the pitch in effort and commitment. Millfield managed to win a couple of short corners which were defended well, producing a fine save from Steve Chase and a goal line clearance by Ben Foulkes. But with only five minutes left in the half Millfield managed to break the dead lock.  A quickly taken free hit, followed by another short corner resulted in Canford being two nil down at half time. This seemed to spur Millfield into another gear, scoring within forty seconds of the restart, continued pressure and the high tempo of the game final lead to three more goals towards the end of the match. Canford will not play a team of this quality again all season, so the players should focus on the positives of the game and look forward to a good season of matches.
