Canford Golfers successfully defend West of England title
Over the demanding links course at Burnham & Berrow, some of the finest young golfers from the West of England met for the annual team singles competition. Canford were there to defend their 2005 title and they successfully accomplished that feat, despite the cold winds on the west coast course.
The victory over Downside was secured with a 5-0 result and large winning margins. The semi-final against Cheltenham was always going to be a tough contest and so it proved to be. Fighting wins by Jon Putman, Phil Steen and Jamie Edwards enabled the Canford boys to negotiate their way passed the Gloucestershire team 3-2.
The final took place on the morning of Thursday 23rd March against Monmouth who had already seen their way through to the final with wins over Sherborne and Radley.
On paper this looked too close to call as Monmouth fielded their first two player with handicaps of 3 each - the competition is played off scratch but this indicates their team strength. In the end Neil Gordon, Jon Putman, Phil Steen and Ed Searle all won by good margins, thereby yielding Canford a 4-1 victory and the title of West of England Champions for the second consecutive year.
