We have enjoyed excellent middle practices on days 1 and 3 on the international ground, and all players are looking and feeling confident ahead of a couple of tough fixtures in the next two days. To cap it all, we won the first match on day 2: Canford 235-6 (30 overs), Soufriere School 88 all out. It was a good one to begin with: although the wicket was quite difficult, the locals had mistaken us for Eton U15 (also on tour here) and we got off to a good start against their U15 bowlers. By the first drinks break they had drafted in their U19s, but our players responded well, and we piled on the runs in the last 10 overs. It was a pretty gruelling bus journey there and back all round the hills, so it was good to have the boost of that result to make it all worthwhile. I understand that there has been regular coverage of our progress on local radio, and we had to fax our team sheet for tomorrow to various sports editors at lunchtime today. Needless to say we inserted a few false leads to fox the local cricket managers, who no doubt will be strengthening their sides after the Soufriere result. Robin Wallis St Lucia, 29 March 06
