Sixth former Charlie Chalkly-Maber has scooped an award from the Volvo Eco Adventure Competition for Young Environmentalists for initiating and sustaining a recycling project at Canford.
The competition gives young people the chance to gain international recognition for their local environmental projects and helps supports environmental education in schools and the local community. Charlie began developing the idea after considering the effects global warming was having on snow sports one of his passions and wanted to positively contribute to the environment on a local level. After talking it over with friends, he set up a paper recycling scheme at Canford, which has been running successfully for 16 months. As well as investigating what materials were allowed to be recycled, liaising with the environmental minister at the local council and raising money to pay for the bins, Charlie enlisted the help of several of his fellow pupils to help with the mammoth task of collected and disposing of all the paper. The scheme has been so successful that it has reduced the school's paper waste by 60%.
As recognition for his achievements, Charlie has been awarded £500 from the Volvo competition to help fund his project and will receive a tree to plant in Canford Park. He commented, I'm really pleased to win the award and am just glad I can do something to help out it's a real team effort. So far we have a recycling bin in 45 of the school's classrooms and are looking to expand the scheme to include glass and plastic waste materials too.
