“Archives are a site’s memory. Without archives we lack a full understanding of what forces have shaped our site. An individual with no memory is dysfunctional. An organization that lacks a sense of itself over time is equally handicapped.”

Diane Vogt-O'Connor, Chief of Conservation, Library of Congress

Introduction

Copy_of_Tower_Jonathan_Cooke_1976.JPG
Housed in the middle room of the Victoria Tower, the Archive Room contains the records of the school's activities and administration since 1923. The collection includes annual school rolls and calendars, a complete set of the school magazine the Canfordian, and many other items which reflect the daily life of the school. Also included in the archives are many photographs, some of Canford in the days before it became a school.

The Archivist, Frank Ahern, is keen to add to this collection and therefore is always happy to receive Canford memorabilia. Should you have any items relating to your time at the school that you no longer wish to keep, please either send them to Frank at the school or contact him (fta@canford.com) to make arrangements. He would also welcome reminiscences from former staff and pupils about their time at Canford and about any memorable people. If you are sending photographs it would be helpful if names could be attached where possible.

Frank works closely with the Old Canfordian Society and the Development Office. He hopes to hold occasional exhibitions of archive materials.

The Canfordian

We have a complete set of the Canfordian in the archives.

Sept_23_2.jpg
For most of its history, the magazine has faithfully chronicled the life of the school through the decades, an aberrant era perhaps being the sixties, when other agendas seem to have been pursued.

The Canfordian is in the process of being digitised so that it can become available to all as an online, searchable resource.  The Old Canfordian Society kindly provided funds for the project to get under way, and Canfordians from 1923 to 1963 are now available to be viewed online by following the link below:

Further progress of the project will require funding and will take time.

OC Photographs

The Canford Archive has a large selection of official house and team photographs that have recently been scanned, digitised and catalogued, and are now being made available for purchase.

The photographic collection currently covers 1955 - 1990. However more recent photos will be added as and when they become available.

The photographs can be viewed and purchased here: www.oc-photos.com

[Note: The Canford Archive also has a large number of photographs of Canford life over the years, many donated by OCs. The school archivist intends to make these available eventually on the archive webpage.]
