Thursday 26th June
Canford 172 (33.5 overs) (Darby 74)
Wellsway 166-8 (Marsh 3-19)
Canford won by 6 runs
Tom Darby, leading the team that will tour South Africa next March, batted at his most fluent to steer Canford to 140-2 in the 22nd over. However, his run-out to an inspired piece of fielding triggered the last 8 Canford wickets falling for only 32 runs in the face of some fine seam-bowling. Wellsway's reply stuttered to 55-3 in the 15th over, but a fourth-wicket partnership of 71 in 12 overs wrested back the advantage. With 40 needed from the last 6 overs and 6 wickets in hand, Wellsway's prospects looked good, but excellent 'death' bowling from Taylor and especially Marsh strangled the run-chase, leaving the visitors tantalisingly short at the end of a thrilling match.
Wednesday 25th June
Canford 251-6 (50 overs) (B Upton 106*, Darby 46)
Filton College 252-5 (A Miles 107*)
Filton College won by 5 wickets
With Upton and Darby well established at 142-1 in the 28th over, Canford looked on course to repeat the previous day's clinical victory over the MCC. However, Filton's bowlers fought back after lunch, containing Canford to a par score with a fast outfield. With hindsight, Filton's faltering start - 32-3 after 14 overs - may have induced a fatal degree of complacency in the Canford fielding performance. Filton added 162 in 27 overs for the fourth wicket, and with Wiltshire batsman Miles completing a fine hundred the visitors reached their target with 15 balls to spare. For Canford, Taylor (1-29 off 8), Graham (2-46 off 10), Grainzevelles (0-27 off 7) and newcomer Anstee (1-35 off 10) all bowled with distinction.

Canford v MCC
MCC 197 (Marsh 3-26, Graham 3-40, Grainzevelles 3-31)
Canford 198-3 (Darby 89*, Upton 59)
Canford won by 7 wickets
Marsh's opening spell of 2-5 from 6 overs reduced MCC to 31-3, giving Canford an advantage that MCC threatened only briefly to wrest back when their no.5, Smallridge (89), constructed a fifth wicket partnership of 81. With spinner Grainzevelles and seamer Graham operating at their best, the last six wickets fell for 40 runs, leaving Canford a target to which first Upton and then Darby guided them with a fine exhibition of stroke play.
Saturday 21st June
Canford 1st XI v Winchester
Winchester 277-6 (50 ov)
Canford 98
Canford lost by 179 runs
Winchester's opening pair brought up the hundred partnership in the 21st over, with McKenzie going on to complete a fine century before lunch. Winchester added only 49 in the 10 overs after the interval, but a late surge saw them to an impressive total, with only seamer Jonathan Marsh returning especially good figures (1-23 from 10 overs). Canford's reply began with a run-out and, against a strong bowling attack, never really recovered, with Tom Darby's innings of 23 the highest score.

1st XI v Millfield
Canford 243-8 (50 overs, Darby 93)
Millfield 245-6 (43 overs)
Millfield won by 4 wickets
Canford made a positive start, with openers Grainzevelles (44) and Upton (35) posting a 93-run partnership in 20 overs. Tom Darby built on this platform with a fine innings of 93, seven short of what would have been his third Canford century against Millfield, but the rest of the middle order struggled against disciplined bowling, and at the break a total of 243 did not look secure. Millfield opener Lawrence virtually took run-rate out of the equation in scoring a fine 79 in 17 overs, allowing his team-mates to steer the visitors home with 7 overs to spare. Triniman (2-27 in 7 overs) was the pick of the bowlers, though Graham, Samuels and Grainzevelles all bowled good containing spells.

1st XI report
For the past 4 years this has been the closest encounter on the Canford fixture list. In that period each team has won twice with victory always going to the team playing away from home and batting first. U15 Théo Grainzevelles took 2-30 in his 10 overs of left-arm spin, and then made 55 opening the batting. His spell in the middle of the innings, with U16 Rob Graham also conceding only 30 off 10, brought Canford back into the match after a brisk start by King's' talented openers. King's' seam bowling was also strong, limiting Canford to only 10 runs between the 10th and 18th overs. Tom Darby (61) then accelerated, but when he, Grainzevelles and skipper Chris Ridley all fell trying to hit over the in-field, the required run-rate proved too demanding for the middle-order.

Cricket v St John's, Leatherhead
Canford 164 (49.1 overs, Taylor 47*)
St John's, Leatherhead 140 (Peters 6-30)
Canford won by 24 runs
This was the first match between the two schools, both of whom fielded 1st XIs drawn from every year group in the school (there were only seven Sixth Formers taking part in the match). Canford's openers found themselves facing a mixture of spin and seam from the start, and the excellence of the visitors' bowling had reduced the home side's innings to 83-7 in the 23rd over. James Taylor, in only his second 1st XI appearance, then played the decisive innings of the match, taking Canford's innings through to the final over with good support from Marsh and Graham. St John's lost two early wickets in their reply as Canford's all-seam attack bowled with exemplary discipline. Ben Peters struck in the 15th over to break a promising third wicket partnership, and went on to take a six-wicket haul in only his third 1st XI match. The game took place in excellent spirit, and there was general agreement that it should become a regular fixture.

The 3 weeks (6 matches) of 20-over cricket which preceded this fixture had brought Canford's 'T20' team no victories, but plenty of valuable lessons in terms of cricketing skills. It had also enabled the selectors to refine their Senior Squad, so that the 1st XI that took the field on this occasion was stronger than the April prototype. The new-look team (containing only three Sixth Formers) overwhelmed their visitors by tea through accurate seam bowling and well-disciplined batting led by the in-form Ben Upton.

1st XI v Poole Grammar School (20-20 competition)
Canford 149-3, Poole GS 150 for 7
Poole GS won by 4 wickets
Canford played Poole Grammar School in a 20-20 that went all the way to the last ball. Canford posted 149 - 3 from their 20 overs, Darby contributing 45. The batting looked assured and the total seemed good. On the slow outfield, Poole were going to need a good start. The opening pair rose to the task confidently with straight hitting earning them several boundaries early on, but loose bowling was punished and the run rate was matched. Although Canford took wickets, big hitting gave way to determined running and the scoreboard ticked over until the last over left Poole needing just 3 runs. Despite two wickets and two further dot balls from Elliot Hawkins, Poole hit the final two runs on the last ball to win. Canford will hope to bowl tighter in their upcoming T20 tournament in Taunton this Sunday.

Matches v Portsmouth Grammar School
1stXI
Canford 193-9 (50 overs)
Portsmouth GS 195-7 (46.4 overs, Samuels 3-39)
PGS won by 2 wickets
At 85-1 at the half-way stage of their innings, Canford looked to have laid the foundation for a winning target of around 240. However, PGS's bowlers conceded only 12 runs in the next 8 overs, and their swift over-rate left Canford only 12 overs after lunch to improve on a strike rate of around 3 runs per over. Instead, wickets tumbled, and only a belligerent cameo of 29* from Louis Samuels took the score close to 200. Canford's bowlers struggled for consistency, yet still managed to create a winning position with the support of some tremendous catching and wicket-keeping. At 134-7 in the 32nd over PGS were under pressure, but a resolute 65* from their no. 6 - easily the highest score of the match - brought them victory with 3 overs to spare, assisted by the 50 extras (half of them wides) that Canford conceded. Congratulations to PGS on a fine display. For Canford, there is no great mystery over how the 1st XI's performance can and will be ratcheted up a level for future fixtures - watch this space!

1st XI v Sherborne
Sherborne 130 all out (35 overs, Grainzevelles 4-17)
Canford 134-5 (Darby 50, Ridley 35*)
Canford won by 5 wickets
Sherborne's openers, running well between the wickets, put on an impressive opening partnership of 86 in 16 overs as Canford's seamers struggled for consistency. However, the match changed decisively when left-arm spinner Théo Grainzevelles came into the attack. In only his second 1st XI match, he took 4 wickets for 17 runs in 7 overs. At the other end, medium-pacer Louis Samuels bowled perhaps his best spell for the 1st XI, taking 2 for 27 in his seven overs. The pressure they generated, supported by some excellent catching, strangled the Sherborne innings. Rob Graham chipped in with two late wickets as Sherborne were dismissed for 130, all ten wickets having fallen for 45 runs. Canford paced their innings cautiously against good seam and spin bowling. Darby made an intelligent 50 and Ridley anchored the second half of the innings to ensure that Canford reached their target securely.
