Tuesday 9th June saw a visit from the world renowned cricketer, Sir Garry Sobers. In the UK to promote his annual schools tournament which will have its 25th anniversary in 2011, Sir Garry addressed an audience of pupils, parents and staff.
As well as information on the tour (which Canford won in 1998), there was a chance for pupils to question Sir Garry on his views on Twenty20 cricket, the differences between playing on wickets in Barbados and the UK and how he felt at the point when he had hit 5 sixes and was facing the bowler for the final ball of the over.
Sir Garry has been described as "the greatest all-round cricketer the world has seen… a brilliant batsman, splendid fielder, particularly close to the wicket, and a bowler of extraordinary skill, whether bowling with the new ball, providing orthodox left-arm spin or over-the-wrist spin".

In 1968 Sobers became the first batsman ever to hit six sixes in a single over of six consecutive balls in first-class cricket. The feat consisted of five clean hits for six and one six where the ball was caught but carried over the boundary by Roger Davis. Sobers was playing as captain of Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan in Swansea; the unfortunate bowler was Malcolm Nash.
