Visiting Poet - Tobias Hill

We were fortunate to have a visit from poet Tobias Hills recently who came to give a reading and discuss his work with some of our Sixth Form. Tobias is a very interesting individual who has spent most of his life living, working and writing in various parts of London. His writing exudes the dark and mysterious feeling of the capital, as well as touching on a plethora of other intriguing spheres of human experience.

At an enchanting recital in the library, the arrayed ranks of English enthusiasts were treated to a collection of both poetry and prose, with themes ranging from an obsession with one of the crown jewels, to a striking sequence about his grandfather. Tobias stressed his point that reading poems aloud highlighted their musicality, something that was well noted during his 45 minute long recital. There was a flurry of questions from pupils afterwards, which were answered with flair and fascinating depth. The following morning the Lower Sixth English sets were able to glean even more from the writer as he conducted a masterclass of his creative trade, encompassing both poetic exercises and an analysis of several drafts of his yet unpublished works. A fascinating and most enjoyable session that has no doubt inspired pupils in their creative work.
