Pupils Dig Up School Grounds

Pupils from Canford’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF) have joined forces with The Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, to help with their tree-planting scheme by planting saplings in the grounds at the school.

It’s all part of the Woodland Trust’s ‘Tree For All’ campaign – the largest children’s tree-planting mission the UK has ever seen. Launched in 2004, the five-year project aims to give every child in the country the chance to plant a tree through schools, youth and community groups, public events or in their own gardens. Already nearly five and a half million trees have been planted as part of the project across the UK.

The cadets took stock of the copse and hedging packs sent by the Trust, each containing 30 British native trees, which will now be planted in a suitable area of Canford’s grounds, where they will be maintained and cared for by the cadets. Canford has an extensive community service programme that gives pupils an opportunity to develop their awareness and understanding of others, and contribute to their local community in positive ways. Paul Bunton of the Woodland Trust says: “Even schools with quite small grounds will often be able to accommodate one of our hedge or copse packs which can inspire young people to really get in touch with nature and learn about the ecology of these wonderful habitats.”

The trees and shrubs are all native broadleaved which means, that with a little luck, they will be growing on well into the next century – when the children’s grandchildren will be able to inspect their handiwork.

The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity that aims to conserve, restore and re-establish native woodland by acquiring sites and campaigning for woodland protection. The trust currently owns and cares for over 1,000 woods, covering over 50,000 acres. Since its establishment in 1972, the Woodland Trust has planted over 4.5 million trees and created 3,200 hectares of new native woodland.
