The boys'  under 16 indoor hockey team travelled to Wellington School, Somerset to compete in the West of England Indoor Hockey Tournament. Our first match saw us play against Taunton School and, playing at a faster pace than the opposition, Canford claimed a 5 – 0 victory.  Kings Bruton were next and although Canford inexplicably slowed down they won comfortably 4 – 0.  The team were reminded not to become complacent and they once again stepped up the pace for their next match against last year’s winners, Exeter School. An excellent team performance proved to the players that they had the potential to win the tournament as they stormed to a 4 – 1 win.  Knowing that we had already qualified for the semi finals, the coaching team were able to play some of the younger members of the squad for the final group game against Yeovil and Somerset, and once again the side achieved a 3 – 0 victory.

In our semi final we played Ashmoor HC, (runners up from the other pool to Millfield) and regular finalists in this competition.  The match started evenly and both sides found it hard to create clear cut chances, but with 5 minutes remaining in the first half Canford found the target twice to lead 2 – 0 at the break.  Ashmoor HC came out in a more determined mood but were thwarted by Tom Jenvey in goal; saving all that was thrown at him and, as a result of another fine save, Canford score a break away goal, their third and the final goal of the game.

In the other semi final, Exeter School surprisingly beat Millfield 3 – 2 on penalty strokes after drawing 3 – 3 only to find themselves playing Canford again, this time in the final.  Canford came to the final full of confidence having only conceded one goal throughout the group and semi final stages -  as a result of this, the final turn out to be a one sided affair with Canford running out comfortable winners 6 – 1.

A great performance over a long day, this is the first time in Canford School’s history a side has reach a National Indoor final. Well done to the team, coach and manager for a well-deserved victory.

Coach: Terry Adby
Manager: David Collison
