Week 1 Sports Results
Week 1

6th September 2008

The academic year was launched with an encouraging set of sports performances and some very satisfying results. The only casualty of the weekend weather was the golf match against Millfield.

A full set of matches against King’s Bruton yielded a clean sweep of victories.

The 1st XV ran out 44-12 victors. The Canford team put in a strong performance of athleticism, hard running and fluent passing. They will need to build upon this success with greater concentration, if they are to be more secure in defence and if they are to capitalise on plentiful possession.

The other senior teams also performed well. The 2nd XV won 29-5 and the 3rd XV won 60-0. This demonstrates strength in depth at senior level.

Canford Colts B team overcame Bruton Colts A team 27-13, with Hayward scoring two tries. The team handling skills were sound, as were the communications and coherence, particularly with the forwards.

The Junior Colts A, B & C teams all produced impressive victories, with able performances in the rainy conditions. Tries from Trinniman, Gobinet, Horner, Scobie, Corrin (3) and Watt (2). An excellent start to the season.

The under 14s made their mark on the Canford rugby scene; strong forward play and running confidence amongst the backs racked up bag wins: 55-0 for the A team and 52-0 for the B team.

The rugby squads can be encouraged by these results and by the performances. However, sterner tests are on the way and there can be no room for complacency.

The girls’ hockey programme was more varied and some of their opponents were well-drilled bigger schools.

The 1st team squad went down to a 3-0 defeat to Millfield. They pulled back to a 2-2 draw against Marlborough and a 1-0 victory against Blundells. (Goals from Cumming-Bruce, Wiltshire & Linley-Adams.) With some of our toughest opponents, these results enabled the Canford squad to face up to the challenges of the season ahead.

The U16 girl’s team beat Marlborough 3-2 with goals from Davenport, Holt & Connor. This is an excellent result. The same squad went down 1-0 to Millfield.

The U15B girls lost 3-0 to a strong Marlborough A/B team; nevertheless, their performance gave cause for optimism.

The U14 team enjoyed victory against Marlborough 2-1 (Goals by Fairchild & Dean). A tremendous start for the new girls.

So, the term is under way, the results are mixed, but the coaches are very encouraged by the overall performances at this early stage.
