While pursuing excellence for the senior teams and for outstanding individuals, Canford believes that sport is to be enjoyed by all and is valuable to all. Self-confidence, teamwork and a sense of achievement are qualities readily transferable to other areas of their lives and so all pupils are involved in sport at some level. For those in their first year it is a valuable aid to a sense of belonging. The most able proceed to county, regional and national honours but the school is proud of all its team performances. The proximity of the river and of the ample flat and well drained playing fields encourages high standards. The facilities include squash courts, a heated swimming pool, two Astroturf pitches and a royal tennis court; Canford is one of only two schools to possess one. The large sports centre, opened in 1996, offers a considerable range of opportunity. Few schools can boast their own golf course in the grounds and the sport is widely enjoyed.
