ICT

Canford School has a lively and successful ICT department.  The network extends to all academic areas, boarding and day houses, the library, sports centre and theatre. We are a dual platform network supporting both Mac and PC platforms.

ICT is an embedded part of classroom teaching at Canford. Pupils learn to use the resources available to them as an integrated part of the learning environment.   Every subject area has access to the network and students are encouraged to apply the skills they learn in a variety of contexts. Small clusters of PCs are to be found in various parts of the school such as the Design and Technology Department, Music, and the Library.

There are wireless laptops available for use in English, Maths, Physics, Geography, Economics and Business Studies. Interactive whiteboards are installed in 10 subject areas with plans to extend these to more subject areas in the near future.

The ICT suite was fully refurbished in 2004 with state of the art facilities and an innovative layout. The main computer room is open all day for pupil access and until 9pm most evenings.

Pupils are taught the new ITQ for IT users qualification in the Shell year, allowing them to achieve a minimum of a full GCSE in ICT. Those more interested in the subject are given the opportunity to take the qualification further. The course provides a high level of competency and diversity in core ICT skills, and it is proving to be extremely popular with the pupils.
