Spirit of Place
'Spirit of Place' is unique to Canford. After the end of summer examinations, Shells, Fourths and Lower Sixth pupils take part in two days of activities organised in small groups with the Lower Sixth pupils as leaders. These are designed to broaden minds and develop creativity outside the classroom and are held both at school and also beyond the gates. 2010 events included the following:
- Harnessing the power and science of energy - including visits to Didcot Power Station, the Christchurch Museum of Electricity and investigations into Canford School's energy resources including water mills
- Evolution and the path of man - creating presentations and video to illustrate and provoke discussion
- Creation of board games based on the theme of Canford School
- Art and design
- Music - making music from recycled instruments
Pupils are encouraged to think independently and also work as part of a team to complete their tasks. Full use is made of ICT and the presentations which are produced are consistently excellent.
All the work is exhibited on Speech Day.
