Professional Concerts

julia doyle

friday 19th january 2018, 7:30pm

Tickets: £10/£14 - 25% discount if booked in conjunction with the Britten Sinfonia concert below

World renowned soprano Julia Doyle is joined by lutenist Matthew Wadsworth to perform a selection of lute songs. Described in ‘The Times’ as ‘outstanding’, and by ‘The Guardian’ as giving performances that are ‘radiant, intelligent and wholly engaging’, this concert offers a rare opportunity to hear Julia in Bournemouth and singing an intimate recital in the excellent acoustic of  Canford’s Concert Hall. A quintessential Renaissanace genre, lute songs are by measure, charming, melancholy, lively, risque and always lyrical and beautiful. The music of John Dowland even attracted the pop star, Sting, to make a recording of the music. Julia’s programme will include songs by Dowland, Campion and Purcell, as well as more recent music by Britten and a new composition for solo theorbo by Stephen Goss.

britten sinfonia

Tickets: £10/£14 - 25% discount if booked in conjunction with Julia Doyle's concert above

The Britten Sinfonia has established itself as one of the country’s leading orchestras, and its ‘At lunch series’, based at the Wigmore Hall in London, provides the players with an opportunity to perform chamber works, and showcase their skills in this genre. We are delighted, once again, that three musicians, the leader of the Sinfonia, Jaqueline Shave, principal ‘cellist, Caroline Dearnley, alongside pianist Huw Watkins will be in residence at Canford, and that their stay will culminate in this concert performance of major works from the chamber repertoire, bringing their Wigmore recital to Canford. An eclectic programme will include Mozart’s piano trio in B flat, Arvo Pärt’s ‘Spiegel im Spiegel’ and Philip Glass, ‘Orbit’. The Britten Sinfonia has a history of supporting new composers, and the concert will also include competition winner Leo Chadburn’s music, being performed for the first time in this concert series. Previous concerts at Canford from this extraordinary ensemble have been electrifying, and showcased some dazzling musicianship. This one is sure to be the same top-quality.
