Big Band and the Big Screen concert

Big Band and the Big Screen concert

Friday 7th February saw the Music School come alive with a sprinkling of Hollywood as the 'Big Band and the Big Screen' Concert took to the stage, with entertainment from the Orchestra, Wind Orchestra and the Big Band. Delicious canapés were served throughout the evening alongside drinks from the Friends of Canford Music Bar. Level 2 technical floristry students from the Academy of Floristry Bournemouth created stunning floral table designs and Canford’s technical team provided backdrop lighting and props to set the scene.

Canford teacher Jo Toy, reviewing the evening for the school’s annual magazine, wrote:

Friday 7th was a special night; another very special night.  With a new Maestro in possession of the baton, Mr Ings (ably assisted by Mr Hardie and a second ‘newbie’, Mr Belassie), the Orchestra, the Wind Orchestra and the Big Band entertained us most royally in a packed Music School Concert Hall with renditions culled from the Big Screen.  First up, the Orchestra gave us some wonderful super-spy action sounds from Mission Impossible and a medley of 007 themes, with Daisy T and Emi B on vocals (Adele had better look to her Skyfall laurels).  Then the Wind Orchestra journeyed from the Viking North (How to Train your Dragon) to the Windy City of clubland Chicago. Finally, the Big Band gave us a selection of modern classics; from The Chicken (!) to Williams’ Happy, and then Molly R as chanteuse for Buble’s Everything, Hancock’s Chameleon, through the fabulous family of The Incredibles; and then full circle to Weather Report’s Birdland.  Mix in some interval music from small groups made up of our most accomplished ‘jazzers’ and a beautiful rendition of ‘How ‘Bout We Dance’ from Mimi D.

Well, what’s not to like love?
