Canford’s latest dramatic offering was one of Noel Coward’s most enduring works: Brief Encounter. Canford’s talented drama pupils portrayed the chance meeting between two happily married strangers with a depth of emotion displaying both maturity and empathy.
Brief Encounter is a moving love story about two people who meet by accident and fall in love. As well as the raw emotion displayed by the central characters there were plenty of delightful comedy moments portrayed brilliantly by the ensemble cast.
The sets were ambitious and bold with an elaborate mix of filmography, photographic displays, and varying levels to portray the central station, home and the river. Hats off to the wonderful set designers and those who carried out scene changes with effortless grace.
Live music from the talented band was used cleverly to differentiate between places and moods and was played to perfection alongside beautiful singing which transported the audience to a different time and place.
Well done to all those who took part in the challenge of staging such a well-known and significant production. You did Canford proud.

Brief Encounter was a challenging but thoroughly rewarding play to produce. Alongside the enormous complexity of fusing film with live action, the cast gave sympathetic, heartwarming and often highly amusing performances in this adaptation of the much-loved film. The technical crew also deserve much praise for successfully managing the elaborate lighting, sound and staging required. Thank you to everyone involved in making this such a memorable school production.
