English department trips and events

The English department arranges opportunities for pupils to experience plays, poets and novelists for all year groups throughout each year, both on and off site, to bring studies to life and broaden cultural experiences.  During the final week of the Summer term, pupils enjoyed a number of these.

On Monday 24th June a selected group of talented Shell and Fourth Form creative writers visited Lulworth Cove and experienced a series of writing exercises with OC and published writer, Matt Knott. In the afternoon we returned to school to draft and perfect the pupils’ work. It was a beautiful day in every way and the pupils produced some fantastic, powerful pieces of writing, which were then gathered into a booklet ready for Family Day.

On Tuesday 25th June, The Illyria Outdoor Theatre Company performed Romeo and Juliet for the shell year group under the shade of the oak trees by Lower Tadmore. The Shells have all studied the play in their English classes, and it was a lovely way to experience Shakespeare on the stage rather than on the page. It was a lively and pacey performance and kept the audience’s attention throughout.  After the performance, pupils had the chance to ask questions in a Q&A session with the actors.
