Canford welcomes rugby and hockey teams from Chilean school

We had the pleasure of hosting boys' rugby and girls' hockey teams from Craighouse School, Santiago, Chile on Tuesday 17th September 2024. This has now become a regular biennial visit and one we eagerly look forward to. It's always a great experience for pupils at the start of the new season.

From Greg Davis – Head of Hockey

This year Craighouse brought two Girls hockey sides and the Canford girls were really keen and looking forward to the challenge.

In the 1st team match it was an extremely tight affair and the match was played at a frantic pace with both sides looking to attack at every opportunity. Craighouse opened the scoring, but Canford began to settle and clawed a goal back making the half time score 1-1. The game became very physical in the 2nd half with both teams looking to try and find a winner.  There were some moments of individual brilliance from both sides which kept the crowd on their toes. Canford found the magic moment though and after some good passages of play eventually were rewarded with a well worked goal. With the score 2-1 to Canford, Craighouse pushed everyone forward to find an equaliser. However, the Canford girls kept the cool and defended like never before to hold onto their lead and a well-deserved victory.

In the 2nd match between the Craighouse 2nd girls vs Canford U16A girls, it was an even tighter contest as the match was poised at 0-0 for most of the game. Both teams giving it there all and trying to find that important breakthrough. Both Goal keepers were busy, and makings saves and keeping their teams in with a shout. Craighouse managed to finally break the dead lock and scored what would be the winning goal with 5 minutes left on the clock. Another great exposure of hockey for those that were watching.

We would like to thank Craighouse for visiting us and we look forward to seeing them again in the future.

From Tom Roberts – Head of Rugby

Canford put up a valiant fight but fell short in a thrilling rugby match against Craighouse School from Chile. The match was a physical contest, with both teams displaying immense determination and skill. Craighouse's outside centre was a standout, breaking through Canford's defence on multiple occasions and proving difficult to contain.

Despite the relentless pressure, Canford stayed in the fight. Ralph B showcased his kicking prowess, slotting two brilliant penalties, including one from just in front of halfway, to keep Canford in the game. Ollie S added to the scoreboard with a sensational try in the corner, using slick footwork to evade defenders from short range.

Although the final score favoured Craighouse, Canford's players left the field with their heads held high. They can be extremely proud of their effort and resilience against a strong international opponent.
