Canfordians awarded top prizes at Magdalen College School Model United Nations Conference

As part of the Sixth Form Global Connections Programme, on Saturday 8th March Canford took a team of 14 Sixth Form pupils to the Magdalen College School Model United Nations conference.

Canfordians have a track record of excellent success at Model UN events, and this year was no exception, with one delegation winning the overall outstanding delegation at the event and outstanding delegate prizes for a number of individual pupils.

Global Connections Pupil Leader, Isabelle A, shared her experience of the conference:

“We had the task of representing Russia and South Korea in a range of committees, including the Security Council, Disarmament, and Human Rights committees, among many others. There were many interesting debates which took place across a number of different topics, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the demilitarisation of the Korean peninsula, emissions from Artificial Intelligence, the Myanmar and Rohingya Genocide, the electoral situation in Georgia, and the Gulf War, to name just a few. Everyone had a really great day learning more about complex global affairs, debating with and publicly speaking in front of new people, and gathering new perspectives and viewpoints from a range of different countries. A big congratulations for Inca B-J, who received the best delegate prize for representing Russia in the Security Council, to Carmel H, who won the outstanding delegate prize for representing Russia in the Environmental Committee, and also to Elliot W, who received the outstanding delegate prize for representing Russia in the Disarmament Committee. Also, to the whole of the delegation of Russia, who won the prize for overall outstanding delegation. It was a really great event, and one that everyone really enjoyed and has learnt lots from!”

Head of Canford Global Connections, Lenka Collison said:

Attending Model United Nations (MUN) conferences helps pupils develop global awareness by engaging with complex international issues such as conflict resolution, climate change, and human rights. Additionally, MUN enhances critical thinking, diplomacy, and public speaking skills, preparing Canfordians to navigate an interconnected world as informed and engaged global citizens.
