End of Year celebrations 2024

End of Year celebrations 2024

Canford held two days of celebrations to end another successful year at the school. On Thursday 27th June, pupils, staff and parents gathered for Family Day where a packed programme of events began with junior and senior assemblies for pupils, parents and staff followed by Tennis, Cricket v Old Canfordians on Mountjoy, an Upper Sixth Leavers’ Music Concert and drinks on the lawn alongside the excitement of the Canford Gallop! During the afternoon families could also play golf, watch a Real tennis Exhibition match and see various displays of talented pupil work, including GCSE and A Level work in the DT Department, a selection of writing by pupils in the library, the A Level Art Summer Show and end of year GCSE exhibition in the Art School. To end her residency at Canford, Laura Buckle exhibited her own work alongside a collaborative project featuring work from artists working in the Canford art department, who each produced work in response to the River Stour.

The following day, Upper Sixth families gathered at Wimborne Minster for a special Leavers’ Service, followed by Speech Day and prizegiving for Upper Sixth pupils held at the school. The Leavers’ Service can be watched on the Canford Music YouTube channel via this link:

Headmaster Ben Vessey and Chair of Governors Sir Gary Coward reviewed the past year and spoke of the many Canford achievements. Guest Speaker, Maurice Walters, presented the prizes. Maurice joined Canford School in 2008 where he worked for eight years, ultimately holding the position of Head of Academic Enrichment, before being appointed Deputy Head (Academic) at Shrewsbury School. Maurice currently works in educational consultancy. Under the pseudonym Henry J. Cockburn, Maurice has written several novels. He is also a composer, having won the BBC Radio 3 Carol Competition in December 2022 and is the co-host of the literary and musical podcast, Lines and Dots. Canford musicians gave a stunning performance of ‘Fly me to the Moon’ and the outgoing Heads of School Tara, Jimmy, Abigail and Eddie offered the vote of thanks.

On the final night of the Summer Term, the Upper Sixth leavers and their families celebrated with a Great Gatsby themed Summer Ball enjoying drinks on the lawns and a delicious supper before dancing the night away in the marquee, trying their luck in the casino and fun on the dodgems.  We wish all our leavers every happiness and success as they embark on the next stage of their lives.
