First place in the country among excellent results in UK National Senior Maths Challenge
Maths is highly successful at Canford. 126 pupils sat the subject at GCSE, with three quarters of all papers graded 9-7 (A*/A) and 97% 9-5 (A*/B). 58 pupils chose the subject for A Level, with over half of all grades A*/A and nearly 80% at A*-B.
We are delighted to share more positive news in this year’s National Senior Maths Challenge, organised by the UKMT (United Kingdom Mathematics Trust) and open to pupils in Years 13 and below. Canford has a strong track record in this competition, and once again our pupils have achieved outstanding results. 15 received a Gold Award, given to only the top 10% of entrants, a further 15 received a Silver Award and 13 pupils achieved a Bronze.
A special mention goes to Fifth Former Johnny Gu who achieved 100% and tied for 1st place in the country.
Jack Wilson, Maths teacher, commented:
The Senior Maths Challenge is a very popular event among schools across the UK and awards are recognised and highly sought after by top universities. The paper is designed for pupils in Sixth Form, but able pupils in Lower School can still take part. Our Canford pupils can be extremely proud of their efforts and demonstrated great strength in depth across all three year groups in this year’s competition, with Johnny’s first place a staggering achievement, particularly as he is still in the Fifth Form.
