Finalist – TES Schools Awards 2023 – Boarding School of the Year
Canford has been chosen as a finalist for the Boarding School of the Year award in the TES Schools Awards 2023, selected from top boarding schools across the UK. This is wonderful national recognition for our full boarding school ethos and all the opportunities this offers our pupils as we celebrate our Centenary year.
To be considered for Boarding School of the Year, the TES requested that entrants consider whether their boarding school had experienced rapid improvement or maintained continued excellence, as well as innovation, imagination and efforts to develop pupils in ways that go beyond academic achievement and league tables. The Canford boarding experience is constantly evolving to support pupils to thrive in the 21st century. In the past year Canford was recognised in the Sunday Times Parent Power 2023 as the best co-educational independent school in the South West for 2022 A Level performance, in addition to being awarded the BSA’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Initiative Award in 2023 for its pioneering Sleep Programme and selected as a Finalist in the Muddy Stilettos Best Schools Awards 2023 for originality in teaching music and the arts. Improvements to boarding and day houses have been made recently, with the building of two new modern purpose-built boys’ boarding houses and the move of day houses to create hubs for boy boarding, girl boarding and day pupils. Work is also underway on the build of a new Sixth Form College which will include Upper Sixth day and boarding areas alongside an educational and social hub for the whole Sixth Form. The rationale behind this project is to support the expectations and personal development needs of 17-18 year olds preparing for the competitive world beyond Canford. The new Sixth Form will provide enhanced opportunities and structures for pupils to lead their own learning and development in ways which are transformational in the transition from school to life beyond.

We are delighted and honoured to be a finalist in the Boarding School of the Year category in this year’s TES Schools Awards. As a full boarding school we are committed to offering a seven day a week boarding experience. This enables us to provide significant breadth of academic and co-curricular opportunities with a multi-faceted approach to pastoral care through houses, peer to peer support and a team of wellbeing professionals. A Canford education is a dynamic one, and we are constantly reviewing and refreshing what we offer to ensure it is relevant and forward thinking for the young people in our care.
