GCSE results 2022

Following the excellent achievements of our Upper Sixth last week in their A Level/Pre-U examinations, where we saw 40.4% of all grades awarded A*, we are equally delighted for our Fifth Formers who have recorded wonderful success in their GCSEs.

33.6% of all Canford grades were awarded the very highest grade 9, compared to the national average of 6.6%, while 58.5% of all grades were 9-8 (A*) compared to the national average of 15.1%. 79.4% of all grades awarded to Canfordians were 9-7 (A*-A), compared with a national overall figure of 26.3% and 53% in independent schools on average. 99.7% of Canford GCSEs were graded 9-4 (A*-C) compared with 73% nationally and 92.5% in independent schools.

Results of the highest quality are across the range of subjects in Arts, Sciences and Humanities, with over 80% of all Canford Maths, English, Geography, French, German, Philosophy and Theology (RS), History, Physical Education, Latin, Classical Greek, Computing, Chemistry and Biology papers graded 9-7.

We are hugely proud of this impressive year group of young people who have demonstrated strength of character, positivity and community spirit through the challenging years of the pandemic. So many of them have not only worked incredibly hard to achieve fantastic grades academically but have also balanced their studies with significant personal development experiences beyond the classroom, something which is an integral feature of the dynamic education Canford offers to all its pupils. Eight pupils secured a clean sweep of grade 9s and twenty pupils obtained at least eight grade 9s. Among them are county, regional and national level sport players – including an England U19 cricketer – numerous shining lights across the creative and performing arts, competitors in Ten Tors and great contributors to house life.

Headmaster Ben Vessey commented:

The past years have been extremely challenging for everyone and thus we are truly delighted for our talented and resilient Fifth Formers who have excelled in their GCSEs. These pupils, individually and as a group, are a perfect illustration of the core Canford values of courage, purpose, ambition and leadership which they have demonstrated not only through academic success but also more widely through their tremendous contribution to the co-curricular and community life of the School.  As with our A Level results, our successful programme of remote learning played a crucial role in the continuity of education for all our pupils during the pandemic leading to these excellent results today. We cannot wait to welcome this year group back in September for the exciting challenges of Sixth Form as they embark on their A Level courses.”
