Holocaust Memorial Day 2025

Monday 27th January marked Holocaust Memorial Day, which falls on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest concentration camp complex established during the Holocaust, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia. The theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day was ‘For a better future’ The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust hope that HMD 2025 can be an opportunity for people to come together, learn both from and about the past, and take actions to make a better future for all. Pupils and staff gathered on the Sunken Lawn at morning break on Holocaust Memorial Day for a remembrance ceremony. This provided an opportunity to learn and reflect, with pupils and staff reading poignant accounts from Holocaust survivors. Stones painted with the names and dates of some of those who lost their lives were placed around the war memorial fountain.  Photographs from the ceremony can be viewed below:

Canford’s Chamber Orchestra recorded a moving performance of Schindler’s List, last Thursday as a tribute to Holocaust Memorial Day which was played during the ceremony.  Our pupil musicians truly excelled themselves with this work, with a particularly outstanding performance from Shell (Year 9) soloist, Freya S.
