February is LGBT+ History month. The 2024 theme celebrates LGBT+ peoples’ contribution to the field of Medicine and Healthcare both historically and today. The national campaign wants to showcase the amazing work of LGBT+ staff across the NHS and in other healthcare settings, in providing healthcare, especially during the pandemic.
This year, at Canford, we wanted to increase the awareness of our Rainbow Alliance. The Canford Rainbow Alliance meet to help ensure the Canford community is a safe, inclusive and comfortable space for those who are allies or members of the LGBTQIA+ community. In support of LGBT+ History, House Pupil Leaders wore pride badges and spoke to pupils about the LGBT+ History month activities planned and how they could get involved.
On Wednesday 7th February, pupils and staff had the opportunity to go to a lunchtime rainbow pom-pom making workshop in the library. A reading display and recommended reading list was available throughout February for any staff and pupils interested in reading any LGBT+ fiction or non-fiction.
On Wednesday 21st February, guest speakers Eli and Kirsty from Space Youth Project, a local LGBT+ charity, visited Canford to talk about LGBT+ History and the local support services that Space offer to LGBT+ young people. They shared their personal stories and answered questions posed by Canford pupils.
All lower school pupils completed an LGBT+ History month quiz during tutor time which promoted discussion and raised awareness amongst the pupil body. Canford was proud to support LGBT+ History month.
