As part of our focus on the importance of literacy, today we are celebrating National Poetry Day alongside schools across the country encouraging everyone to make, experience and share poetry. This year’s theme is REFUGE which aims to show how poetry can impact positively on wellbeing, literacy and motivation. Taking refuge in poetry might include using poems to build memories and inner strength, sharing experiences bringing people together or exploring injustice and contrasts of experience in times of war. In lessons we have been using resources such as composing poems on bricks to build a refuge of poetry and there will be drop in poetry sessions taking place in the library through the day.
We are also delighted to welcome celebrated poet Ash Dickinson to Canford, one of the busiest poets in the country. Ash has published four books of poetry and has performed in Australia, Canada, USA, Spain, Jordan, the Czech Republic and Germany as well as at festivals across the UK. He is giving a series of talks today in the Assembly Hall so every pupil will have the chance to learn more about his passion for poetry.
