Huge congratulations to Lower Sixth Canfordian Mimi who has been placed second in the Girton College, University of Cambridge Humanities Writing Competition 2022.
The annual competition invites pupils from across the globe to research and write a piece beyond the curriculum, using one or more of the ‘Lawrence Room museum’ objects, as their focus. Since its foundation, Girton College has acquired a wide range of important artefacts and antiquities, often from its benefactors and supporters. Many of these were brought together early in the twentieth century in a small museum, later named the Lawrence Room in memory of Amy Lilian Lawrence (1891 Natural Sciences).
Judges look for the ability to connect different areas of knowledge, to think about details and to communicate clearly and Mimi’s submission, entitled ‘The Pig’s Tale’, was highly praised. Mimi and her family attended a prize giving ceremony on Thursday 5th May which included a tour of the College and the Lawrence Room museum, and tea with the Mistress. Her prize – a mix of cash and Cambridge University Press book tokens – is divided equally between Mimi and Canford. She also receives a Girton College gift bag, including a copy of a newly published book on Girton’s museum collection, The Lawrence Room at Girton College.
