Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day

The UK’s biggest celebration of online safety takes place on Tuesday 6th February. The focus of this year’s Safer Internet Day is online issues that matter to young people, including:

·        The changes they see online

·        New and emerging technology

·        Managing influence

In order to promote the importance of keeping safe online through our school community, Canford is using the opportunity to further educate pupils and parents about internet safety in a number of different ways.

For pupils

On Friday 2nd February our Shell pupils attended an Internet Safety talk with Karl Hopwood as part of the Beyond the Gates programme. On Tuesday 6th February all pupils have a tutor time activity planned in house to reinforce the key messages behind ‘Safer Internet Day’, including completing a quiz to test their knowledge: https://saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/safer-internet-day-2024/quiz-for-14-18-year-olds

For parents and the wider community

We are sharing a number of useful resources which we hope will be helpful for parents and the wider community:

·        https://saferinternet.org.uk/

·        https://saferinternet.org.uk/guide-and-resource/social-media-guides - Advice about key social media platforms and apps

·        https://swgfl.org.uk/resources/checklists/ - Social Media Checklists

·        A free webinar is available for parents on Internet Safety: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/svaw24/t-pqgovmv

We embrace all the educational benefits of technology, but it is important for pupils to have a balance and spend time away from screens to allow for quiet time and also to develop all important face to face social skills.
