Shell Music and Poetry event

Shell Music and Poetry event

On Tuesday 6th February, our Shells showcased their Poetry and Musical talents at the annual judged event, held in the Music School. It is always a memorable evening in the Easter term creative arts calendar.

Three Shell musicians, Ruby M, Yang Yang G and Tilda M all performed superbly and numerous Shell pupils shared poems and monologues with the winners and runners-up going forward to national competitions. Congratulations to Classic Poetry Recital winners and runners-up Mark D, Will H and Jack B who now enter the National Poetry By Heart competition, with the final taking place this summer at The Globe Theatre in London.  The other competition is the Shakespearean Monologue, which Canfordians have entered before but this was the first time the Shakespearean Monologue recital had featured in the Shell Music and Poetry evening and it was a wonderful addition to the programme. Toby B and Isla C will now go forward to the regional round representing Canford, with the possibility of reaching the final which is also held at The Globe Theatre in London in the summer.

Sam Crouch, Head of Shell English, said

As ever, it was a lovely evening, celebrating the best of the artistic talent in the Shell year group. A number of parents attended in person in the Music School, with those living further afield watching live on YouTube. Thank you to Professor Juliette Atkinson from University College London for being our guest judge for the evening, she was highly impressed with the standard of both the writing and recitation on display.

Classic (solo recital of a published poem) – Mark D 1st, Will H and Jack B 2nd

Shakespearean Monologue recital – Toby B 1st, Isla C 2nd
