Many congratulations to the nine Canfordians who have been offered places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities this year.
Baynham and CP Snow Essay Prize Winners 2021
As part of our wider academic enrichment programme, each year we see pupils produce excellence in written skills through both internal and external essay writing, and this year was no exception. The Lower Sixth take part in the Baynham and C P Snow Essay competitions, with the Baynham Prize for the best essay on a question related to an arts or humanities topic and the C P Snow Prize recognises the best essay on a scientific topic. Over the course of the Christmas Term, all members of the Lower Sixth devised, researched and completed an essay on a topic of their choosing.
There are three categories for each prize; Overall Winner, Highly Commended, and Nominated.
The Baynham Prize was shared this year between Harry Young for his essay “Slowbalisation” and Milind Khashu for his exploration of the dangers of “Single Story” narratives.
The following entries were highly commended:
Catherine Wray
Rosie Parkin
Alice Hazell
Tom Amy
The following were nominated for consideration:
Charlotte Mendelson
Amaia Echebarrieta
Hester Mugford
Charlie Shepherd
In a first for Canford, one pupil researched, wrote and entered two essays on two different topics; one scientific and the other humanities based (which is certainly not against the rules) and after a double marking process, Tom Marriott, Head of Academic Enrichment was in the unique position of announcing Milind Khashu as the outright winner of the C P Snow Prize for his essay exploring the efficacy of face masks in minimising the spread of a global pandemic.
The following entries were highly commended:
Alex Daniel
Nat Davey
Jess Fry
Cici Su
The following were nominated for consideration:
Flora Lingafelter
Izzy Richards
Charlie Ge
Louis McHamish
Phoebe Foxley
Matilda Perei

Tom Marriott, Head of Academic Enrichment, commented:
“These annual essay competitions are an excellent way to develop research skills and written communication. There were some fascinating entries and it was extremely difficult to narrow it down to the short list. Every entry was given a comment and an overall grade and my thanks go to all our Lower Sixth pupils for taking part.”
