Boat Club honours Derek Drury at House Regatta
Pupils, staff, families and the wider Canford community enjoyed the annual House Regatta on Saturday 9th June, enjoying the action alongside the Pimm’s and cream teas to the sound of the Poole Borough Band.
Pupils excelled on the river over the 250 metre sprint course. Congratulations go to Salisbury House who took the overall House Regatta win for the second year running after securing the cumulative points across the various races. Lancaster was a very close second, forcing officials to turn to highest second place wins as there was a tie for the total number of wins for these houses. Guest of Honour, Olympic Bronze Medallist, Sarah Winckless presented the medals and trophies. For the full results report, please visit House Regatta 2018 results
During the event the boathouse was re-named in honour of Derek Drury, celebrated former coach to Canford and Oxbridge, who was such a prominent figure and force in rowing. There was a dedication by Andrew Powell from Canford before sons Ralf and Arnie performed the official unveiling of the name on the west side of the boathouse. This tribute follows the opening of special gates and a dedicated plaque in honour of Derek Drury at the famous Leander Club in Henley. The naming of our new girls’ boat also took place, the Elisa M, and a special thanks goes to the Sullivan and Hewett families for their continued support.
It was a fantastic day with the perfect weather. A real sense of community and camaraderie amidst the boat club with friends and families.
The day culminated with the annual Boat Club Dinner in the Great Hall, where Guest of Honour, Olympic Bronze Medallist Sarah Winckless gave an inspiring after dinner speech.
Thank you to everyone involved in making the Regatta and the celebration dinner such a wonderful day, and also to all those who have supported the club over the past year.
