Canford Pupils Raise over £3,000 for Charity through Art Exhibition
To raise money for their forthcoming school partnership trip to India, Lower Sixth Formers Lily Lloyd and Rosie Southgate curated an exhibition of art works in the school gallery for sale and auction which resulted in donations of over £3000.
Canford has been involved with Goodwill Children’s Homes for over fifteen years. The Homes are in Tamil Nadu, Southern India and provide residential care for orphans, children from impoverished one parent families and children from deprived tribal families. Each year a group of pupils and teachers from Canford travel to Southern India to spend time in the Thandigudi Village, Tamil Nadu and in Sanarpatti. Their main work involves teaching and general maintenance work in the primary school, which is part of the orphanage. The children come from a variety of circumstances, often from very poor backgrounds and are frequently orphaned at a young age. The support at Goodwill allows them the opportunity for a brighter future. For more information please visit www.canford.com/India-Partnership
Canford pupils wishing to take part in the trip have to raise funds themselves in advance. Lily and Rosie’s exhibition consisted of pieces donated by OC’s, parents, artists and galleries. The girls wrote to the exhibitors explaining the school trip and how the money would be spent. The response was fantastic with many very generous with their donations.
On 12th May, the girls hosted a private view attended by members of the Canford community. As well as seeing and bidding for pieces in the exhibition, it also allowed Lily and Rosie to give further information about the forthcoming trip. The exhibition was a complete sell out and was both a financial success as well as being a great occasion. They learned a huge amount about putting on an exhibition from start to finish as well as hosting all those that attended the private view.
Rosie and Lily learned a huge amount about creating an exhibition from start to finish, and about hosting an event:
“We were both inspired to do something positive after learning more about the Goodwill Children’s Home. Art seemed a great way to both raise funds for the charity and also offer something back to people kindly supporting us. It was a lot of hard work getting the exhibition together, but was also very exciting and rewarding to see our plan made a reality. Thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way, and to all those who supported us with donations. We can’t wait for our trip to India now in the summer to meet the children and see how the money will be spent improving their lives.”
