City Reach Summer Camp 2019
Children from the inner city community of Northam, Southampton, came to Canford over the weekend of 15th-16th June for the annual, fun filled activity camp.
Arriving in time for lunch in the Great Hall on Saturday, the children then headed to the Canford Sports Centre for some team games in the sports hall and some swimming in the indoor pool. After a quick snack, it was off to Sandbanks for a picnic, sandcastle building and beach games before returning to sing songs round the campfire in the Canford grounds.
After a night’s sleep under canvas, all enjoyed a hearty cooked breakfast before more games and a swim. After lunch, the children returned home, no doubt tired but hopefully with lots of happy memories.
Canford pupils enjoyed the experience just as much as the children. One wrote:
“An afternoon of activity in the sports hall, almost two hours in the swimming pool and - with an eventual let-up in the rain - a trip to the beach at Sandbanks did nothing to dampen the kids’ boundless energy (even if it left our Canford volunteers exhausted!).”
while another summed up the feelings of many of the Sixth Formers involved:
“It was a great weekend and lovely to get to know the children more over the two days. It was so lovely to see them enjoying themselves doing things we so often take for granted. They were all so full of energy and fun ideas of games to play in the pool, at the park and while playing by the tents. I can’t wait to see them all the next time they visit Canford.”
David Allen, Director of Community Action at Canford, commented:
“This weekend is always a very special one for not only the volunteers and children from Northam but equally for our Sixth Form pupils and staff here at Canford. I was very proud of the way our pupils went the extra mile and worked so hard to give the children the best weekend possible. For some of those from Northam, this will be their only summer holiday and we hope they all had a fantastic time.”
