Canford Hockey - England NAGS Selection
Three Canford pupils are celebrating selection for the England Hockey National Age Group Squads (NAGS) following their successful performances at the recent Futures Cup competition for the Wessex Leopards, during the summer break.
Martha Taylor (U18) Molly Fairbairn (U16) & Will Whitmore (U16) will all take part in the NAGS programme, which begins with two assessment camps over the next six weeks. Thereafter, a series of training camps over a four-month period begins in November, leading to potential involvement in international matches and tournaments. Through NAGS, players have access to experienced coaching, and players will receive education from practitioners working with the English Institute of Sport (EIS) and the senior England squads. Here, they receive professional advice on nutrition, strength and conditioning, injury management and psychology.
All three are thrilled with their selection achievement:
“After 3 seasons playing in the England Hockey development system, I am really excited to have been given the opportunity to play at the highest level. It has been an amazing year following the success of both the Canford and Bournemouth U16 teams at the nationals and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead.” Martha Taylor
“I am very happy of getting selected into the squad and I hope to carry on improving and pushing myself. Canford has helped me to reach this by supporting me and helping me when needed.” Molly Fairbairn
“I’m very happy with getting through to the squad and look forward to what is next. Canford has helped me toward this selection with fitness programs over the summer and really good coaching over the last two years.” Will Whitmore
Matt Collison, Director of Hockey, commented:
“Canford has a strong tradition of hockey success at county, regional and national level and I am delighted for Martha, Molly and Will. Selection of this standard does not come through talent alone. It requires dedication, commitment and a lot of hard work in training. I wish them every success on the exciting journey ahead.”
