Higher Education update
Higher Education update – another year of impressive offers
With 546 university and higher education offers received to date by 156 Canfordians, representing an average of four offers per pupil, it is proving to be another very successful year for our leavers. We are absolutely delighted for them all, who have achieved such an impressive range of offers from top institutions despite all the challenges they have faced during the pandemic and the assessed grades replacing the summer 2021 A Level and Pre-U examinations.
79% of all offers are from Russell Group/Sunday Times Top 12 institutions and include 7 places at Oxbridge and 7 for the highly competitive Medicine and Veterinary Science courses at other institutions.
Many congratulations to all and an additional ‘well done’ to the following on their offers for courses which involve a more complex and rigorous application and interview process:
Callum Bruce (Engineering, Cambridge), Laura Driver (Engineering, Oxford), Eve Hewett (History and French, Oxford), Emily Howat (Engineering, Oxford), Pavlos Karampoulas (Medicine, Cambridge), Tamara Read-Ward (Chemistry, Oxford), Catalina Taylor (English, Cambridge), George Baugniet (Veterinary Medicine), Toby Bishop (Medicine), Jacob Browning (Medicine), Frances Fleming (Medicine), Ines Mitchell (Veterinary Medicine), Miles Quick (Medicine) and Will Yeatman (Medicine).
Canford is an official SAT testing centre for international university admissions. This year sees the first Canfordian, Zac Prentice, to apply for and be awarded a place at a Japanese university, Nagoya, to study Japanese and Economics, while offers have also been received from Salve Regina University Rhode Island, State University of Montana, Colgate University New York, Villanova University Pennsylvania, Boston College Massachusetts, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Harrisburg Institute of Science & Technology Pennsylvania.
Particular congratulations also go to pupils who have been awarded scholarships. Adam Phillips has won an Athletics and Singing scholarship to Drake University in Iowa, Josh Brook who has been offered academic and golf scholarships at both Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas and from Dominican College in New York and Catalina Taylor has been successful at the Cambridge Choral awards in winning a Choral Scholarship for St John’s Voices, which is the St John’s College, Cambridge choir for female voices.
The diversity of courses chosen reflects the spirit of a Canford education in offering opportunities for all pupils to develop and follow their own personal career paths, whichever direction they choose. Alongside courses in traditional academic curriculum subjects, Canfordians also have offers for courses such as Law with French, Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience, Music and Sound Production, Peace Studies and International Relations, Interior Architecture, Health and Exercise Science, Geology, Forest Management and Philosophy. Pupils have gained offers on multiple prestigious Art Foundation courses, with decisions still pending from University of Arts London and Manchester, and for Music with the Leeds Conservatoire and the British and Irish Modern Music Institute.
Head of Careers Michael Doherty commented:
“The global pandemic has compounded the challenges young people always face when deciding on future plans and submitting applications for higher education and future career paths. I have been very impressed by the proactive and considered approach taken by all the Canfordians to this year’s admissions process, and am delighted for every single pupil in achieving so many offers from top quality institutions in the UK and overseas across a wide array of disciplines. The HE/Careers team will continue to offer support throughout the coming months as well as on and post results day to help all Canfordians move on positively to the next stage of their lives.”
