House Poetry

House Poetry competition

Sunday 21st March marked World Poetry Day. Each year poetry is celebrated on this day as one of humanity’s most treasured forms of cultural and linguistic expression and identity. While we enjoy poetry throughout the school year within lessons and beyond, World Poetry Day is an occasion to honour poets, foster the convergence between poetry and other arts such as theatre, dance, music and painting, and raise the visibility of poetry in the media.

Canford’s Head of English, Richard Redwood, used the occasion to announce the winners of the school’s first House Poetry competition.

I’d like to congratulate all entrants to the Canford School inaugural House Poetry competition. Particular thanks to Wimborne House who won the overall competition. The quality of the poems submitted on the three themes (Match, 25 words and Limerick) made the judging very difficult indeed. Chiefly, we were looking for effective images, innovative use of form, creative command of language and an interesting take on the theme or style. The winning poems, detailed below, are in the words of Brander Matthews - brief, buoyant and brilliant. The standard for next year’s entries has now been set.

Congratulations to these seven pupils, and to Wimborne House, who are the overall winners of this competition. You can read each of the winning poems on the Canford blog
