Jazz-age Chicago arrived on the Layard stage for this year's musical
Layard Theatre 20
The Layard Theatre's 20th Birthday
On Saturday 18th May, Canford’s Layard Theatre welcomed staff and pupils, both past and present, who have had the privilege to enjoy this wonderful resource, to an afternoon of celebration marking 20 years since the Layard Theatre held its opening ceremony in May 1999. An installation of lights, costumes, props and memorabilia, with work from our talented art scholars created in response to the building, was on display with ‘access all areas’ allowing the Canford community to walk around the stage, through the dressing rooms and up to Jarman Studio hidden in the depths of the building. The display included unseen alternative stage designs for past productions, photographs of current teachers performing on stage when they were pupils here and an original musical number produced by an all teaching staff cast!
Director of Drama, Laura Blake commented “This was an opportunity to thank all those who have contributed to the legacy of this special place, helping it to become the warm and vibrant venue that it is today. The theatre has been at the heart of school life for many OCs and has been the location for the forging of friendships and memories that endure well in to the future.”
Current pupils were given the opportunity to record their memories of the theatre, demonstrating just how important it remains for the school. One note read “I love coming to The Layard, everyone who works here loves what they do and are more than happy to give any advice whenever you need it. Oh, and the acting’s pretty great as well!”
We hope all who shared in the festivities enjoyed celebrating our fabulous theatre! A link to photographs from the evening are shown below.
