Shell Music and Poetry evening
The annual Shell Music and Poetry evening took place on Thursday 3rd February in the Music School and was once again a memorable evening giving our Year 9s the chance to perform. Shell music scholars performed a number of different pieces to an audience of parents, pupils and staff while poetry recitals were given by Shells in the six Shell English sets. The poetry performances were entered into a competition with three different categories:
· Classic – Solo performers reciting a published poem (to enter the national competition, pupils will learn and perform a second poem)
· Freestyle – A pair or group performance of a published poem
· Celebration – Pupils perform their own poetry, solo or in groups
Sarah Holloway, Canford’s Music Administrator said “The evening included wonderful performances from our talented Shell music scholars, interspersed with the poetry recitals and showcasing the breadth of ability in the year group with some wonderfully evocative music-making supporting and enhancing the atmosphere.”
Caroline Barrett, former Head of English, came back to judge the competition and commented that “The standard was higher than ever in this poetry competition and the music was also excellent.”
Congratulations to the following competition winners:
Classic – Alex B reciting ‘Matilda’ by Hilaire Belloc
Freestyle – Emma K and Georgia K reciting ‘Remember’ by Matt Goodfellow
Celebration – Joint winners: Santi S and Henry S reciting ‘In Heaven’ Shell R’s poem and Evie, Eva, Lincoln and Luca reciting ‘I Prefer’ Shell O’s poem.
Classic winner, Alex B, and Celebration winners, Evie, Eva, Lincoln and Luca, plan to enter the national Poetry By Heart competition, with the final held at The Globe theatre in the summer.
