Canford is celebrating winning the Rifles Cup 2019 in its first year of entering this prestigious Army competition held over two days, 20-22 September, at Longmoor Camp.

Across the Combined Cadet Force (Army) and the Army Cadet Force, over 80,000 cadets parade in 2,000 different Schools, Cadet Huts and Community Centres around the United Kingdom.  The Rifles make up 25% of this and all Rifles Cadets are eligible to take part in the Rifles National Cadet Cup Competition, which takes place once a year in Hampshire.

Training for the event started in the Summer Term, with a three day camp, followed by a number of training events through September, including a weekend away.  The competition itself saw the Canford team pitted against both CCF and ACF teams from across the country, all competing through a series of stands run by members of the regular Army.  These stands included obstacle crossing, military knowledge, patrolling, first aid and casualty evacuation, urban attacks, observation, mine clearance, rural attacks, a fitness event and Patrol Base defence.

The team of Ollie Leat, Tessa Marley, Jo Cox, Will Toosey, Samuel Smith, Amber Herrington, Beau Gater, Henry Barham and Jess Fry, worked exceptionally well together, showing great team spirit, resilience and a dynamic problem solving ability.  They were rewarded for their tenacity and team work, winning the competition and becoming national champions.

Major Ben Coward commented:

“It has been wonderful to see the team develop through the training and competition, gelling exceptionally well, finding ways of putting the principles taught into action.  The team was well led by Ollie Leat and Tessa Marley, who had to think on their feet throughout the testing competition and I was impressed by their determination and can do attitude.  Winning the competition was the icing on the cake, following a brilliant weekend away.”
