City Reach Isle of Wight community trip

City Reach Isle of Wight community trip

Canford shares a long-term partnership with City Reach (Northam) This project between our pupils and the inner city community of Northam involves a programme of visits and activities. Northam is a small neighbourhood in Southampton near the heart of the city which is geographically quite isolated and with few local amenities.

For the people of Northam, this project provides an opportunity to take part in a range of activities which it is sometimes difficult for them to access and also provides support for the work of the Community Centre and its leaders. In return it offers Canford pupils the opportunity to positively contribute in a deprived city area; and to help younger members of that community.

One of the events includes an activity weekend at an outdoor education centre. Upper Sixth Community Service and City Reach pupil leader, Jacqueline S shares her experience of the recent activity weekend on the Isle of Wight:

“From the 3rd to the 5th of October 2025, we had the wonderful opportunity to travel to the Isle of Wight with some of the children from City Reach for a weekend full of fun, connection, and adventure. It was an incredible few days where we got to bond, make new friends, and create lasting memories together. Throughout the weekend, we took part in a wide range of exciting activities that really helped everyone come out of their shells and feel comfortable with one another. Some of the highlights included climbing, laser tag, and even an escape room challenge, which brought out everyone’s teamwork and problem-solving skills.

On our final evening, we gathered around a bonfire under the stars, sharing stories, laughter, and toasted marshmallows. The atmosphere was warm and full of joy, and it truly felt like we had become one big family over the course of just a few days. The children were all so enthusiastic, friendly, and welcoming, which made it easy to connect with them right from the start. What stood out most was how supportive everyone was—cheering each other on during the more challenging or scary moments and celebrating each success, big or small.

As the trip came to an end, the feeling was bittersweet. Everyone was excited to return home, yet sad to part ways with new friends. I’m already looking forward to seeing everyone again at the upcoming Christmas party later this year."
