Geography

We hope that as many Canfordians as possible gain an awareness of place, environmental responsibility and an understanding of cultural diversity. We aim to stimulate an interest in, and a wonder of, the world around us and give Canfordians a desire to explore and to travel confidently.

Geography provides a liberal education that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries in bringing together social and natural sciences - people and their environment. It deals with issues that are central for society and it equips the young to face the future.

Professor Andrew Goudie, University of Oxford

Why study Geography?

Whether you are a scientist or favour the humanities, Geography as a subject offers the opportunity to add breadth to your studies. The course aims to equip pupils with a range of useful skills from graphical, statistical and analytical through to debating, presentation and argument.
Geography is also a popular subject choice at A Level for many reasons, but the overriding one is our pupils' interest in the subject. We want to give them the opportunity to explore new ideas and give them a broad understanding of the landscape around them and an appreciation of some of the main issues facing humanity today.

....geography is a subject for our times. It is inherently multidisciplinary in a world that increasingly values people who have the skills needed to work across the physical and social sciences. This is underlined by the Russell Group of Universities, along with the Minister David Willetts MP, who both recognise geography as one of the key "facilitating" subjects for entry to degree level study.
