The Bronze Level of the Award at Canford is open to any pupil in Year 10, though it could result in a limited CCF experience.  It is largely funded by Canford aside from enrolment and basic administrative costs.   Equipment, with the exception of walking boots, is available through the school.

1 – 2 hours a week each Monday working at a farm for the disabled (High Mead Farm) carried out as part of the Monday Enterprises Scheme.

3 or 6 months

1 hour a week outside timetabled major sports.

6 or 3 months

1 hour a week carried out as part of the activities programme.

Practice: 2 days/1 night

Assessed: 2 days/1 night

Training requires 1 hour a week for two terms and 1 weekend camping and navigation skills on a 2 day practice expedition held in May. The assessed expedition is run towards the end of the Summer term in June.

The Gold Level of the Award at Canford is open to any pupil once they have turned 16.

Training is ideally started in Fifth Form and then completed in the Lower Sixth. The Award can be easily completed before leaving Canford and is achievable for those pupils who join in the Sixth Form.

It is funded at cost by the individual though Canford staff time is not included. This is in the region of £400 but can increase depending on how ambitious individuals are with their expeditions.

Training is completed in two stages:

Ideally: 5 Mondays training and a practice 3 day expedition in Wales in the Fifth Form.

Compulsory: 1 hour a week during the Lower Sixth year, 2 Sundays walking, 1 weekend camping and navigation skills and a 4 day/3 night practice expedition - all during term time. The assessed expedition is run towards the end of the Summer holidays between the Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth years and includes 2 days travel.

5 days/4 nights

Spent on a residential course away from home and from friends ideally during the Summer holidays between the Fifth and Lower Sixth Forms.

*If the candidate has not got a Silver Award, he/she must undertake a further 6 months in the Volunteering or the longer of the Physical or Skills sections.
