Golf

Within the grounds of Canford School there is an excellent 9-hole golf course.  It boasts tight fairways, a winding stream and tricky small greens; it is a good test of golf for players of all standards.  This facility is available to all pupils to utilise in their leisure time or as an activity, alternatively they can sign up for golf as a main sport and then it becomes a little more serious.

The school team competes in two national competitions (HMC Foursomes and the ISGA Matchplay) as well as having friendly fixtures.  The school team will consist mainly of talented single figure handicap players and one of their more distinctive features is that it may be made up of boys and girls from different year groups within the school, right across the age range.  Virtually all matches are played off scratch and the school has reached the National Finals, in at least one of the competitions, in 3 of the last 4 years.

The golf squad is run by enthusiastic staff and expert coaching is supplied by PGA qualified coach Colin Murray who has worked at a number of clubs and schools across Dorset and Hampshire.

There are ample opportunities for beginners and intermediate standard golfers at Canford and for some matches we would put out a ‘B’ team.  School golf is keenly supported by a thriving Old Canfordian Golfing Society, who we play twice a year in a competitive match. Many recent leavers play in these matches.

For anyone who is serious about golf, Canford has become an obvious school to consider and for many, a school of first choice. For talented golfers, possibly looking at coming to Canford in the sixth form, there is the Terrence Cobden Pike Legacy which has been set up to provide financial assistance to enable them to bring their golfing skills and academic ability to Canford.
