PGCE (Edge Hill University)

After growing up in Snowdonia, Steve completed a Business and Economics degree at the University of Wales Aberystwyth. After his university studies he went on to become a registered financial adviser for one of the largest global banking organisations. Steve then chose to re-train as a teacher and accepted a post at a sixth form college in Bristol, where he taught for a year before emigrating to New Zealand. He was the Head of Department at one of the foremost schools in NZ for the last twelve years before deciding to return home with his family to join the Canford community.

Nick Jones

BA (University of Nottingham)
PGCE (Nottingham Trent)

Having attended a state school near Bath, Nick studied Economics and Agricultural Economics at Nottingham before completing a PGCE in Business Studies with IT at Nottingham Trent. Nick joined the department in 2001 from St Paul's Girls' School and also has experience of working in a number of co-educational boarding schools having started teaching at St Peter's York before moving to Cheltenham College. Nick is a girls' rowing coach and former Housemaster in Salisbury House.

Alexander McFetrich

BA (University of Newcastle)
PGCE (University of London)

Alex joined Canford in September 2022. On completion of his Business Management degree from Newcastle University, Alex went on to work within a vibrant Marketing Team at Surrey County Cricket Club. After three years at the Kia Oval, Alex moved to Bournemouth to take up a role at a craft drinks wholesaler, again within the Sales and Marketing team. The emergence of covid and lockdowns required a rethink and a move into education, with his teacher training and PGCE achieved while working at a boarding school in Romsey.

A keen sports enthusiast, Alex runs a social sevens rugby side with his two brothers and is an avid cricket supporter.

Matthew Pringle

BA Hons (Durham)

Matt studied at Canford before going on to the University of Durham to read Economics.

After a brief stint working for a church he took up teaching, initially at Canford, before going on to teach at boarding schools in Oxford, Eastbourne and Bath. He has held a variety of roles including Head of Department, Head of Careers, and Assistant Housemaster. He returned to Canford in 2023 to take up the position of Housemaster of Monteacute House and Teacher of Economics and Business.

Outside of the classroom he enjoys almost any form of watersports and outward bound activities, and is actively involved in the boat club and CCF.

Jolyon Toy

MA (Cantab)
MSc (University of London)

Educated at Tonbridge School, Jo took his first degree in Economics at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge and after several years in the ‘real world’ (three years in the shipping department of a seismic survey firm, three years working for the Hong Kong Government, and a year as an administrator for a small touring theatre company), the call of education was too strong, and he acquired a PGCE from the Institute of Education in London. Spells at The Perse (Cambridge); St. Paul’s (London), where he found time to complete a part-time degree in Politics and Administration at Birkbeck College; Sevenoaks (as Head of Department); and then Eastbourne College for twelve years, with nine of those as a Day Housemaster followed before joining Canford in 2013.

A keen sports coach (rugby and hockey), he is also a keen but poor saxophonist always looking for an opportunity to join a band that will let him do the solo from ‘Baker Street’!
